4K and HDR looks great
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this alongside a new LG OLED TV and the 4K HDR movies on disc look amazing. Could definitely notice a difference between regular SD/HD material on TV and from watching a 4K HDR disc on this player.

Good Player; Skimps on Features & Build Quality
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Having used two other 4K UHD Blu-ray players, I can say that the LG UP970 feels decidedly more entry-level than competing models. It does the job without any major issues and is fast with a sleek design. However, it lacks many advanced options and doesn't feel as solidly built compared to other players. PROS: - Easy set up. Simply connect an HDMI cable (make sure it's a Certified Premium cable), plug it into a power outlet, and then follow the on-screen instructions. - Very fast and responsive. Discs are fast to load and the unit responds to commands from the remote quickly. - Dual HDMI outputs. HDMI 2 is reserved for audio-only output. Perfect for those with older soundbars or receivers that can't pass through an HDR signal. - Great picture quality. I've tried several UHD Blu-rays, 3D Blu-rays, regular Blu-rays, and even some old DVDs. All look very nice, if not a bit softer-looking compared to my other 4K players. For UHD Blu-rays, the player automatically engages the HDR mode on my TV without me having to do anything. - The remote control is lightweight and comfortable to hold. COULD BE BETTER: - Other reviewers have stated that this player sounds like a "jet engine" while spinning Blu-ray discs. I certainly don't think the player is THAT loud. Louder than competing brands/models? Sure, but not by much. As soon as I move more than 3 feet from the player, I can't hear it at all. - Compared to my other 4K player, the overall build quality of this LG seems average at best. The LG UP970 is very lightweight and the plastic feels rather cheap. This likely contributes to the slightly louder noise during disc playback. Not a major issue, but because this player is priced identically to competing models, it's something to consider. - There is no "subtitle" button on the remote. If you want to turn on subtitles during movie playback, you'll need to press the "info" button and then turn on subtitles via an on-screen menu. - LG has stated that this player will support Dolby Vision, but there is no sign of such support at the time of this review. Hopefully a firmware update will be released soon. CONS: - The user interface design of this player is archaic - like something out of the early 2000s. It's a shame that LG couldn't implement a version of webOS that it uses on its smart TVs. - The settings menu is extremely limited. There are no advanced audio/video settings. No Bluetooth connectivity for wireless headphones. No obvious way to stream media from a home network. - Only two streaming services - Netflix and YouTube - are available at the time of this review. I'm hopeful that Vudu, Amazon, and others will be added in the future, but there's been no word from LG. OVERALL: If you're looking for a basic, no-frills 4K Blu-ray player, give this one a look. However, competing models in the same price range offer more advanced features, more streaming services, and better build quality. If/when LG updates this player to support Dolby Vision, that will help it stand out.

A good not great 4K Blu-ray player
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a good 4K Blu-ray player with Wi-Fi streaming. It is paired with my LG 55C7 using a Monster Ultra HD Black Platinum HDMI cable. The picture is great when playing DVD, Blu-ray and 4K discs. There is also a great picture when streaming. There are a couple of negatives which prevent this player from being great. First, the streaming Apps are limited and there does not appear to be a way to add more Apps. Secondly, turning on the player does not turn on the TV or switch the input as expected. In addition, turning off the TV does not turn off the player. I am not sure if there is some setting which accomplishes this, but I have not come across it. I expect more from LG in this regard, because my Sony products and even my 10/11 year old Panasonic products have this turning on, turning off and switching input feature. LG, get your game UP!

Great 4k hdr blu ray player
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I initially purchased the Sony x800 4k blu ray player and I liked it; however, the player would freeze consistently. So I returned it, and purchased this lg. I must say the picture quality is indistinguishable between the lg and the Sony. Netflix and YouTube hdr play without any issues on this player; however, on the Sony hdr would not engage at times when viewing YouTube and Netflix hdr. Don't get me wrong the Sony is a great bluray player in its own right and maybe I just had a bad unit, but picture quality wise this lg is right there with it. The lg will receive a Dolby vision update and is cheaper at the moment. Build quality is where the Sony has the advantage but I purchased this player for how it plays my movies and not how much it weighs or the design. I've had no issues with noise even while playing Sony discs as some have reported. My player build date was April 2017 so maybe that's why. This is a great player and you can't go wrong selecting this player especially if you a Dolby vision enabled tv.

Quick setup
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This was so easy to setup but really I did not expect it to be difficult. The UP970 is packed with easy instructions and you also have the on screen instructions. With the WiFi or Ethernet setup you can also stream YouTube and Netflix. The picture is clear and in true HD but you will need a 4K tv to have the HD experience. Your old blu-ray and DVD catalogs also works great because this LG UP 970 also upscale the pictures. It do not take much space so it can fit nicely by your tv. My pros: Light and slim size Remote only needs 1 battery Easy setup 3D capable for 3D tvs Great UHD picture Easy updates using WiFi My cons: No HDMI cable included Not a digital display player I think this is right on the mark with other blu ray players.

Works Well for Dolby Vision
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I wanted a UHD (4k) Blu-Ray player that supported Dolby Vision and this is one of a very few that does (as of April 2018). You have to upgrade the firmware to get Dolby Vision. It does work well with my LG OLED. User interface seems very outdated, same interface as a LG Blu-Ray player from 5 years ago. Only "smart apps" on it are YouTube and Netflix. They both support 4k content and Netflix supports Dolby Vision BUT does NOT support Dolby Atmos - very odd. But no big deal, I use the Netflix app on the TV which supports both. Dual HDMI out is great as my Atmos receiver does not support (won't pass though) HDR/Dolby Vision, so one HDMI goes right to the TV and the other to the audio receiver. Getting the Atmos audio set up was its usual pain in the behind but I think that is due to the receiver automatically trying to get audio from the TV when the TV is on VS getting it from the Blu-Ray player. Quality wise, everything works well. I only own 1 Dolby Vision disc right now but it worked well. I did have the player fail in the middle of watching a regular Blu-Ray, but turned the payer off and back on and I was able to resume where it left off. I have only watched maybe 6 movies on it so far, so it failing once is probably not a good sign, but there was another firmware update since that fail so hopefully that helps.

PLAYS DOLBY VISION AND DOBY ATMOS
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We bought this mainly to play DOBY Atmos. We paired it with LG - 5.1.2-Channel Hi-Res Audio Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer and Dolby Atmos - Black. So far it's working great. We had to buy a DVD that had both Doby Atmos & Vision to test it out. It took a while to get both Doby Vision and Doby Atmos to work (see how to below-LG customer service is no help to get all DOBY to work). Once we were able to do it, both sound and visual is amazing. It was on sale and there seemed to be alot of open box items at even lower price (we passed). Alot of people returned because they couldn't access the system update. Similar products are double the price. The update to the firmware really upgraded the system. To update the DVD player, you have to unlock using 0000 twice. Then in area code, type NO. Then have it look for an update and it will show up. Previously we had it under US and no software update was found. This update lets you see in DOBY vision and is compatible to DOBY Atmos. The only miss was the amount of time and enegery it took to get everything working (thus 1 less star).

Not the perfect!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It would be excellent device if has an app store, but it has only two streaming apps installed already Youtube, Netflix. beside of the high quality picture and not too loud disk drive spinning but LG missed adding a Bluetooth connectivity as this feature is standard on other competitor 4K UHD players out in the market. Quality of picture is gorgeous with HDR. I attached a picture from Allied movie 4k format.

Q: QuestionDoes this still have the noise issues when playing 4k disks?
Asked by jdalkana.
- A:Answer It apparently has to do with the build date of the player. It seems to affect models made the first half of 2017. I had a March build and it had that noise while playing Planet Earth II and other 4K discs. I recently swapped it for an August build and it plays silently, no problems at all.

Q: QuestionAny update for DOLBY VISION, or any features ? I just ordered LG UH850V "65" , super HDR with DOLBY VISION , also with cinematic 3D technology. So how it will be with UP970 4K player ? Any experience here ?!
Asked by yusuf.
- A:Answer The firmware to add DolbyVision support was released last month, and many people got it (myself included). However, apparently the release was pulled due to some issues (I haven't had any) and no timeline given on when it would available again.

Q: QuestionQues 1....Does the LG UP970 support HDMI ULTRA HD DEEP COLOR ??? Ques 2 ...My LG UP970 has a build date of August 2017.....does that mean that DOLBY VISION is already built in or will I have to do a firmware update when it becomes available ???
Asked by JST970.
- A:Answer I just contacted LG yesterday and they said DV update coming at the end of this month. So we'll see. It is also why I bought this player. Waited for first update and price drop and was disappointed to see update was pulled back.

Q: QuestionWe purchased this player on the advice of a Best Buy employee. We also purchased an lg Dolby Atmos sound bar. We were told that this player supported Dolby Atmos. I even package it up and took it back to return it as we do not get the sound. Does it?
Asked by Jean.
- A:Answer It does. It is doby ATMOS compatible. We had to move the cables around after calling LG customer service and you have to put a DVD that has DOLBY ATMOS as well.
